    Question:

What if I was injured while volunteering?

video featuring workers' compensation attorney Phil Turcy

    Answer:

We were called recently from a person in Illinois who sustained an injury while working on a food drive as a volunteer. She wanted to know if she could possibly claim workers’ compensation benefits from the facility that she was volunteering at. Unfortunately, volunteers in Illinois and basically every other state in the country do not fall under the auspices of the Illinois Workers’ Comp Act. They don’t fall under the definition of an employee. However, most of those people are able to pursue a claim outside of the Work Comp Act under some of our state personal injury statutes. If you have a question about whether your claim is covered under the Comp Act or otherwise, please give us a call. Let’s discuss it.
